WMD Synchrodyne Expand – Expander Module for Synchrodyne

The Synchrodyne Expand is the official expander for WMD’s Synchrodyne, unlocking its hidden functions while introducing new features that dramatically extend the sonic potential of the system. With additional oscillators, filters, PLL circuits, and routing flexibility, this module transforms the Synchrodyne into a fully modular and wildly unpredictable signal processor.

At the core of the expansion is a second saw-core VCO, identical in architecture to the original but equipped with expanded patching options. This oscillator offers individual outputs for saw, triangle, and pulse waveforms, and includes inputs for 1V/oct tracking, linear/exponential FM, PWM CV, and hard sync. A second PLL circuit (phase-locked loop) mirrors the Synchrodyne’s original PLL but with far greater control via modular access points.

Clocking is central to the Synchrodyne’s switched-capacitor filter, and the expander allows users to select between clock sources — PLL1, PLL2, the second VCO’s PWM signal, or an external clock patched into the Clk3 input.

The module also introduces a second switched-capacitor filter, functioning as a 24dB/oct low-pass with phase-inverted resonance. It can self-oscillate and includes two outputs: a standard -24dB signal and an amplified, diode-rectified resonance tap, offering unusual tonal possibilities.

A built-in vactrol-based compressor expands the original Synchrodyne’s filter section, with selectable sidechain input options from the 2-pole or 4-pole outputs, or an external signal.

Additional patch points provide access to:

• Extra filter inputs and taps from Synchrodyne’s original circuitry

Altogether, the Synchrodyne Expand takes the chaotic, experimental ethos of the original module and opens it up for precise control, modulation, and creative patching.
