Whether you are completely new to synthesis or a curious hobbyist looking to deepen your understanding, this course will give you the knowledge and confidence to approach any modular system and begin making music with intention, clarity and creativity.

Discover the foundations of synthesis and learn to create your own sounds from the ground up in this hands-on beginners course at Schneiders Keller. The only space in London where you can explore modular hardware in person and learn directly from industry professionals.

This course will run on Monday Evening from 6-8pm throughout October 2026

Across four guided sessions, you will build a practical understanding of:

  • What sound is and how waveforms behave
  • Core synthesis tools including oscillators, filters, VCAs, envelopes, modulation and more. 
  • How control voltage, gates and triggers work and why they matter
  • How to create and patch a complete synth voice from scratch.
  • Ways to add movement, dynamics and expression using LFOs and modulation sources.
  • Techniques for sculpting tone, shaping gestures and making musical decisions.
  • Confidence working hands on with real modular hardware.
  • How to continue practising at home using VCV  Rack.
