WMD Digital VCA MKIII – Click-Free Dual VCA with Zero-Crossing Detection

The Digital VCA MKIII from WMD is a precision-designed dual VCA that tackles a common modular problem: clicks during amplitude modulation. Thanks to its innovative zero-crossing detection (ZCD) technology, it ensures amplitude changes happen only when the signal passes through zero — eliminating those unwanted artifacts, especially on low-frequency content like kicks and bass.

Each channel can operate in one of three modes:

• ZCD Mode: Monitors the input signal and only updates amplitude at zero-crossings — smooth but with minor latency (max ½ cycle of the fundamental).

• TR (Trigger) Mode: Waits for an external trigger to update the amplitude — perfect for rhythmic gating.

• Classic Mode: The VCA responds continuously for real-time control — just like a traditional analog VCA.

With unipolar and bipolar operation, the Digital VCA MKIII also doubles as a VC polarizer or even a ring modulator when driven at audio rate. It's fully DC-coupled, making it equally suitable for audio and CV processing, with low noise and distortion throughout.

WMD also included a dedicated noise source per channel, which, when combined with the ZCD/TR modes, enables stepped or sampled modulation effects reminiscent of sample & hold textures.

With 8-bit CV resolution and two independent VCAs in one 6HP module, the Digital VCA MKIII is not only clean and efficient but also a highly creative utility tool for both performance and sound design.
