Just Friends coordinates six individual outputs whose temporal, rhythmic, and tonal properties are bound to one another. The module operates across two core domains: Shape Mode (low-frequency modulation and envelopes) and Sound Mode (audio-rate synthesis).

In Shape Mode, the module behaves as an array of six interrelated envelopes or LFOs. The global TIME control sweeps from snappy, micro-tonal transients to evolving LFO cycles. The INTONE parameter defines precise time relationships across the channels based on integer fractions, establishing polyrhythmic divisions. Envelopes are physically sculpted using RAMP (asymmetric skew) and CURVE, which morphs vectors from linear lines to sines, exponentials, trapezoids, or variable-width pulses.

In Sound Mode, Just Friends accelerates into a cluster of six additive, through-zero FM oscillators or Mangrove-style impulse generators. Here, TIME tracks master pitch, while INTONE sets up harmonic (otone) and subharmonic (utone) string chords, morphing from unison tracking to massive intervals. Sweeping the CURVE control clockwise past noon activates an internal digital wavefolder, injecting rich harmonic overtones into the patch. A master MIX output sums all six voices through an integrated v4 firmware compressor and soft clipper, stabilizing output levels during heavy polyphonic tracking.

The versatile RUN input unlocks advanced patch-programmable operational modes (such as FLOOM, which configures each channel into an independent, 2-operator FM voice). Additionally, the native Just Type I2C protocol allows the module to pair with digital scriptable modules like monome Teletype or crow for algorithmic voice allocation.
