The Teaching Machines Wellspring is a stereo hardware desktop effect unit designed in Wales. It combines a true stereo physical spring reverb, a dual PT2399 tape-style digital delay, an analog multimode filter, and versatile modulation routing into a single hardware processor.

The Wellspring blends vintage electro-acoustic spatial effects with modern patch routing. At its core is a four-spring mechanical reverb system featuring two 15-inch (38cm) springs per channel. Unlike traditional short-tank spring reverbs that can sound dark or muddy, the long dual-spring configuration delivers a vast, clear, and open stereo acoustic space while retaining classic electro-mechanical spring physics.

Audio signals enter via the rear stereo line inputs or a front-panel 1/4-inch mono instrument/line preamp equipped with adjustable drive and saturation. The signal flows into a stereo delay path driven by twin Princeton PT2399 ICs, known for their warm, tape-like degradation at longer delay times. The delay section offers independent time controls for left (Time 1) and right (Time 2) channels, a "Follow" mode that turns Time 2 into a timing offset for ping-pong or Karplus-Strong synthesis effects, and switchable stereo feedback paths.

Following the delay is an analog multimode filter (Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass, Notch) with dedicated cutoff and Dry/Wet controls to shape incoming signals, smooth delay degradation, or tame feedback. A central "Magic" parameter acts as a global cross-feedback loop, feeding the output of the spring reverb back into the PT2399 delay input. When paired with the onboard wide-range LFO, which reaches audio frequencies and modulates delay and filter parameters independently, the Wellspring functions as a dynamic space-and-time sound design laboratory.

  • True Stereo Spring Reverb: Equipped with four physical 15-inch (38cm) springs (two per channel) to generate expansive, un-muddy spatial reverberation.
  • Dual PT2399 Stereo Delay: Tape-style delay engine offering independent left/right time controls, delay timing offsets, and stereo feedback swapping.
  • 4-Mode Analog Multimode Filter: Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass, and Notch modes for precise tonal shaping, feedback attenuation, and resonance control.
  • "Magic" Cross-Feedback Loop: Dedicated feedback circuit that routes the mechanical spring output back into the delay input for escalating self-oscillation and evolving textures.
  • Audio-Rate Modulation LFO: Features Ramp and Sine waveforms with speeds extending into the audible range, complete with right-channel phase inversion option.
  • Front-Panel Preamp Drive: Dedicated 1/4" front-panel instrument/line input with variable input gain for overdriven tone shaping.
  • External CV Modulation: Control voltage input port enables integration with Eurorack sequencers, LFOs, and hardware modulation sources.
  • Rugged Metal Chassis: Heavy-duty metal desktop enclosure designed for studio processing and live performance rigs.
