Experimental Practice is a hands-on workshop exploring how sounds can be created, transformed, manipulated and reimagined through experimentation.

We learn to listen beyond the obvious sound source, exploring the creative potential of effects and signal processing, in order to develop a unique approach to sound design. 

The objective isn't necessarily to make music, it is to develop a personal relationship with sound.

  • What students will learn
    - Explore sound without relying on conventional musical structures.
    - Understand how effects transform a sound's character.
    - Experiment with distortion, delay, reverb, filtering, modulation and pitch shifting.
    - Create textures, drones, atmospheres, rhythmic patterns and unusual sonic objects.
    - Understand basic signal chains and how the order of effects changes the result.
