The Music Thing Modular Goldfinger is a fully passive desktop matrix mixer and signal routing interface. Built around a touch map constructed from pure gold leaf, it uses skin resistance to route, mix, attenuate, and cross-modulate audio signals, pulses, and control voltages.
Goldfinger re-imagines matrix mixing by replacing physical potentiometers and switches with a direct tactile grid. The interface features six bidirectional 3.5mm jacks connected to a grid of finger-sized touch regions representing every possible signal combination across the inputs and outputs. Passing electricity directly through the user's skin, the module enables fluid signal blending, organic crossfading, and expressive performance gestures.
Because signal routing relies entirely on skin conductivity, performance characteristics vary based on finger pressure, contact area, surface moisture, and movement speed. The passive architecture allows flexible patch configurations, functioning as a 5-input summing mixer, a 4-input/2-output stereo mixer, or a 1-input signal distributor. Due to its unbuffered, high-impedance design, Goldfinger introduces organic signal bleed, subtle distortion, and noise—even acting as an RF antenna when patched into high-gain feedback loops.
