The Music Thing Modular Workshop Computer is an open-source, hardware-programmable Eurorack module inspired by pioneering electronic music studios like EMS and Bell Labs. Powered by a flexible microcontroller architecture, it handles audio processing, digital effects, complex sequencing, and algorithmic signal generation in a compact 8HP footprint.

Originally developed as the brain of the integrated Music Thing Workshop system, the Workshop Computer operates as a standalone Eurorack utility and synthesis engine. Driven by the Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, the module contains no internal fixed firmware; instead, it reads code directly from hot-swappable physical Program (PGM) Cards that hold the microcontroller's flash memory. Swapping a card instantly reconfigures the hardware into an entirely new module—ranging from digital reverbs and Turing Machine random voltage generators to MIDI interfaces and synth voices.

The front panel offers versatile analog and digital I/O, featuring two Audio/CV inputs and outputs, two high-precision 1V/Oct pitch inputs and outputs, and two pulse/gate inputs and outputs. Physical controls include three potentiometers (one large master dial and two smaller attenuators), a three-way toggle switch (ON-OFF-MOMENTARY), and six feedback LEDs.

Because the module uses standard RP2040 architecture, users can program custom cards via USB using Arduino, C/C++ (Pico SDK), CircuitPython, or Lua via drag-and-drop file transfers. The Workshop Computer ships with four cards out of the box (Reverb, Simple MIDI, Turing Machine, and a blank card for custom programming) alongside access to an ever-expanding library of community-developed cards.
