The Clicker is a collaborative creation between conceptualist Jan St. Werner and designer Peter Blasser, housed in a unique hand-burned and oiled Japanese-style wood enclosure. Rather than focusing on sustained, lush textures, this instrument prioritizes the "microsecond," focusing on the violent and beautiful moment a sound is activated. It operates in two distinct states: Click mode, which generates incredibly short, spatial impulses that trigger speakers with percussive precision, and Music mode, which allows for more traditional melodic structures.
At its core, the instrument features two voices, each utilizing a Ringler—a specialized modulation circuit—and cross-modulation paths to unfold complex spectra from tiny signals. The workflow encourages a tactile, improvisational approach where manual trigger buttons and CV inputs interact to create grainy, rough, and highly articulated sonic events. Whether used as a standalone rhythmic generator or integrated into a larger modular environment, it excels at creating "an orchestra in a microsecond," revealing hidden nuances as the listener's perception adjusts to its rapid-fire temporal shifts.
