BlaknBlu Oscar DSF - Dual Stereo DSF Oscillator

BlaknBlu’s Oscar DSF reimagines the sound of FM synthesis through a different kind of math: Discrete Summation Formulae (DSF). While the term might sound like something out of a thesis paper, the results are strikingly musical — lush harmonic content, dynamic stereo behaviour, and no menu diving or matrix routing. It’s everything you love about FM, but simplified.

Inside this 10HP stereo oscillator are two DSF-based voices. Instead of traditional FM modulation chains with multiple carriers and modulators, the Oscar DSF uses two intuitive parameters:

• Partials (which determine harmonic richness)

• Mod Ratio (defining the relationship between harmonics)

A three-way mode switch changes the rules of the harmonic game, switching between Free, Rational, and Irrational modulation types — each providing different musical (or unmusical!) interactions between partials.

Each oscillator is fed through an FM-based wavefolder stage — technically an FM operator with a zero carrier, but in practice it delivers a smooth, characterful wavefolding experience, with responsive CV control and beautiful tonal shaping.

The stereo implementation is another standout. Both oscillators track the same pitch CV, but Oscillator 2 can detune up to an octave up or down, enabling frequency beating, chorusing, or full-on stereo spread. CV-controllable panning complete the voice, making this a truly stereo sound source straight out of the box.

Other thoughtful features include:

• A TUNE switch that toggles between a fixed A440 reference tone and CV input tracking

• Octave switch for quick transposition

• Dual function knobs that control either oscillator frequency or wavefolding depth
